Wyre Power - Development, Construction and Operation of a new 850MW combined cycle gas turbine in Lancashire

The Plant

Wyre Power proposes to build 875 megawatts (MW) of new electricity generation on land within the Hillhouse International Business Park (HIBP), Thornton Cleveleys, with an investment of £600 million. The development will consist of two highly efficient elements: an 850MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power station and a 25MW open cycle gas turbine (OCGT) power station.

The power station will consist of 2 power 'islands' utilising a single shaft type technology which is currently the most efficient method of generating electricity utilising natural gas. The project will also use air cooled condensers which do not have the classic 'plume' issues caused by certain weather conditions and most importantly require a low volume of 'make-up' water from the town's water supplies.

The Site

Hillhouse Business Park is located in Thornton on the Fylde coast of Lancashire and falls within the administrative borough of Wyre Council. Thornton is located approximately 8 kilometres (5 miles) South of Fleetwood and 13 kilometres (8 miles) North-east of Blackpool. The site is located within a predominately industrial area and is designated for employment uses. The site is a disused brown field site and therefore the development does not affect previously undeveloped land. It is located close to the Stanah National Grid sun-station to which the power plant will connect via a buried cable.

The 35 acre tract of land that Wyre Power has secured for the development has been an industrial site for more than a century, with a chemical production facility first built on the site in 1890. The site is located near Blackpool and Fleetwood, some 50 miles from Manchester, and five miles from the Irish Sea.

Benefits to the local economy

It is expected that the development will create 650 jobs during construction, with 40 highly skilled permanent jobs once the power station is in operation. As we have demonstrated with the development of Severn Power, Welsh Power prides itself on being a good neighbour, and we will ensure that Wyre Power contributes to the local economy and benefits local people. In particular we will be looking to ensure that contracts are placed locally wherever possible. To contact us please click on the Contact Us tab above.

Project development status

Wyre Power has a grid connection date of August 2016. Local planning has been obtained and the Company is working to obtain the Section 36 consent from DECC (Department of Energy and Climate Change) which is the permission to build the power plant. The final construction programme will be agreed with the selected OEM with the intention to meet the connection date.
